I much prefer "kick you in the balls" brand of realism to brainless, mushy
idealism any day, but who says these things are supposed to do any good?
They're principles to be followed for their own good.  

Just take history back a step further.  Had these priniciples been valued, we
wouldn't have had two world wars to begin with.  Instead, they were sacrificed
on the altars of economic need and nationalism, and millions suffered.
