For the record, I'm staying out this "debate" this time. I said my piece (peace?) on this topic some time ago. Despite my rather loud (and annoyingly grating, too) internal warnings about this topic, I firmly believe that Franny was not pregnant. no matter what Mr. Updike (whom I haven't read enough of to judge) may or may not have written or said. Don't ask me, I'm not participtating this time! I'm the horrible person who made the initial posting Friday, only because I was looking through the archives and saw a passing mention of "pregnant Franny" Updike is the only fool I'd ever seen advance this idea. I was looking to see if someone could give me a reasonable explanation, because Updike's was crap. At this point I'm nearly sorry I brought it up, as it's disintegrating into a lot of What if's and perhaps, if it was me, Lane might be a really good guy etc.etc. My point of view is that if this is a story about unwanted pregnancy, it's not half the story I think it is. It's no "Hills Like White Elephants" for instance. I didn't mean to restart an old debate. Perhaps we can start speculation about the lost Waker Glass stories or something. Nearly, sorry I brought it up. Robert
