Scottie,
I must say thank you for the warning. The truth is I've spent much of my
life around architects, primarily my mother, but also other people who she
worked with, friends from college, and such. I'm far too aware of all the
mundane aspects of what architects really do. I know I could do a million
other things and be so much richer for it, or have so much more in control,
but then, I guess despite the arguments with contractors, customers
(retarded or not) and builders, I can't really say I'd be happy doing
anything else. My main goal is to spend my entire career completely separate
from ego, the trap so many architects fall into. They are so set on their
art, and their place within that, that they forget what they are trying to
do. For me that means I never want to be famous. I never want to design a
million dollar home. I'd be happier being the person in the back doing all
the thinking, and getting no credit. Somehow I think credit is the biggest
corrupter of them all, with money somewhere close behind. I mostly want to
do urban housing, apartment buildings and such, that work, are reasonably
priced, but are still beautiful. When I say beautiful I don't mean on paper
as much as in reality. Things that are clean, and stripped of unnecessary
decoration, and that feel holy. I mean, all we do our whole lives is go from
one little piece of Holy Ground to another, (said Seymour), right? I just
want people to realize that, maybe without even knowing it consciously, but
knowing it in the deepest way. If someone will let me do this, I can deal
with a few annoying people along the way.

Catherine
