Yes...I've heard two possible motives for the title. One is the one which
you described. The other is that the movie, like an actual magnolia,
blossoms from the beginning and flourishes into an extraordinary ending.

Ernie Anderson, I believe is Paul Thomas Anderson's father that passed away a
few years back. He dedicated Boogie Nights to him along with Robert Ridgely
(who played the Colonel). Oh, by the way, if you haven't seen Boogie Nights
or his first film Hard Eight, check them both out. They are very nice movies.
