Na, I wasn't being ironic. I really do think scientific materialism -- the
point of view you've been espousing -- has so completely permeated our
society that we accept its point of view uncritically. I'm reading Kant's
_Prolegomena_ right now and "dogmatics" are defined as accepting the
reliability of sensory input uncritically. This is just my first read, of
course, but I thought it was pretty interesting. I am, at heart,
Aristotelian and an empiricist. It's just how I go about my daily life, and
I can't really conceive of approaching life any other way. I think most of
us are like this without having considered thoughtfully other options (or at
least the criticism of that position).

It's not bad to be a sheep when you've consciously chosen a shepherd. I
think it's a terrible thing to be a sheep without really knowing who you're
following or that there are other shepherds. Religious faith gets stupid
when it's followed uncritically, and scientific materialism dons its own
particular brand of blinders.

You did a very nice job summing up the posts since your last reply :) Good
luck with Calculus...

Jim
