Scottie, on teaching students who
don't like "Esme":

: In that case, Matt, either change your job or your students.

Esme is for people who "get it." Esme is the easy champion of bfishers,
casual aesthetes and sensitive folks. Fact is, only a tiny portion of my
22 students ever fits those categories. But that's the nature of students
in required classes at large state universities. It's a bit of luck that
I'm teaching to begin with, instead of paying tuition, and only a
slightly smaller bit of luck that I'm allowed to teach out of a
non-standard book. I'll take sub-sensitive students and _Eight Stories_
over student loans or Flannery O'Connor any day.
