changes to the web site

Subject: changes to the web site

To those readers who spend time browsing the web site, I wanted to
announce a few changes.

1) Breakdown by year. As the months piled up, the main page started
to get out of control. So, now the main page is broken down by
calendar year. You can go into the year you want, and you will
get only entries for that year alone. This should speed up the
loading of all pages, which are now more modular.

2) Pages devoted to single years. Now, if you pick "1999," for
instance, you'll only get the twelve months of 1999 to choose
from. This means things will load a lot faster than if you were
loading the lists of ALL years. Searches run across ALL years,
and have not changed at all.

3) There has been no change to the underlying pages. If you have
bookmarked old entries, the naming convention has not changed, and
the names of the web pages themselves are unchanged.

When time permits, I'll add the page for December 2000. I'm a little
too tired tonight to do it accurately, so I would rather let it wait a
day or two and be sure that I'll do the work without any stupid
mistakes. That will close out calendar year 2000 and give us a nearly
complete record going back to early 1997!

Hits on the web site are up hugely. We served out nearly 220
megabytes of hits this last month, with over 1,800 files served out
daily, on average.

I'll get the final month of year 2000 up and running as soon as
possible, and will post a notice here when it's done.

Cheers and regards.
