I thought Rob Rosenbaum's The Man In The Glass House,
which Paul M recommended here yesterday, a pretty fine,
literate piece. But, then a little later, I thought too:
And what a pitiful sight. A sensitive, intelligent human locking
all that imaginative & empathetic power erecting such a fantasy,
out of a handful of yarns & some dubious press gossip, about
a man he hasn't even met.
God knows I've been a fan in my time. (There was a period
when I doubt my cardiovascular system would have survived
the thrill of an encounter with the late Ernest Hemingway.)
But WHAT a third-hand way of exercising one's emotions.
Yet this list is a burgeoning monument to such nonsense.
Aren't the hearties quite right in dismissing books & the idolatry
of bookmen as a fatally seductive way of avoiding the ultimately
more satisfying thing - real life?
Scottie B.
