For what it's worth, I uncharacteristically contacted the Obermen
several months ago in an act of hopeless idealism. I explained that I
anticipated that the answer would be a resounding NO, but that given
that we were soon to be in Holden's 50th year, it might be a wonderful
tribute to have a reading akin to what is done each year on Bloomsday,
in homage to James Joyce and ULYSSES. I suggested that it might be
nice, if unlikely to meet with approval in Cornish, to organize a
celebratory reading exactly along the lines of those that are done
from the Joyce book.

They were speedier than a rejecting editor from the New Yorker in
sending me a note explaining that (as we all know) JDS turns down all
proposed readings, performances, and so on of his work. So the answer
was unambiguously NO, without even bothering to consult the author.

I still think it would be a great tribute that would be made all the
more remarkable by the nod of approval from Cornish. But we know what
the likelihood of that is.

Still, the mind reels at the thought of the readers one could line
up to read a snippet in a reputable venue in, say, a good hall in NYC.

I don't look at it as a promotional event (Salinger certainly doesn't
need any outside help to sell more copies), but it would certainly be
memorable, and probably very affectionate.
