In no particular order, here is my short list of contemporary writers I
suggest are inspirations, to one degree or another, for today's writers:

* Gabriel Garcia Marquez
* Thomas Pynchon
* Madison Smartt Bell
* Lorrie Moore
* Rick Bass
* Susan Sontag
* L. Manning Vines
* Joan Didion
* Don DeLillo
* Paul Auster
* Philip Roth
* Kurt Vonnegut
* Tom Wolfe
* Martin Amis
* and, of course, the ghost of J.D. Salinger

Even Frank McCourt, whose writing looks as effortless as Willie Mays's
baseball game looked.

This is no comprehensive collection of names, and I'll bet everyone on this
list who has, at one point or another, picked up a pen to write, could
assemble a different list.
