In a message dated 98-01-08 22:11:49 EST, you write: << At least, that's how I see it. If anyone disagrees, please say so. It's entirely possible that I'm off-the-wall! --tim >> Actually, I agree with you. But notice your example of brow beating and belittling--it consisted largely of "you" directed comments. They weren't directed toward the ideas, but toward the person (as you mentioned in an earlier post). Now, what happens when "idea" directed comments are taken personally--when they are taken as brow beating? This happens a lot too. A lot of this does have to do with tone, tho, and the way the ideas are presented, but a lot of it also has to do with the how secure the persons reading idea directed comments are. I guess I tend to see everyone as being equal in the arena of ideas--yeah, some are more comfortable with ideas than others, or more experienced in them, but bottom line is good ideas can come from anywhere....so....why worry? I've been in an AOL chat where a member spoke a couple lines in French to another member, who responded in French. There was a one or two line exchange, and one non-French speaking chat participant (I don't speak French) made a Big Deal out of it. Complained to the host, etc. That, to me, was insecurity on the part of the complainer, not a problem with the two French speaking people. I guess if I sounded like I disagreed with you, I'd say it was because I was looking at a different situation... Jim
