Camille: > I'm hardly surprised by your assessment > though, Matt - this version tends to be a `love it or hate it' dealie ... I know opinions tend to become separated from the names of their owners on this list, so I don't mind repeating that I like the film, all things considered. But coming personally from a performance standpoint, much like yourself, I hear an awkwardness in Leo's delivery. He gums and lips the language and doesn't sound comfortable with it. He doesn't seem to inhabit the lines, but to say them as if he's trying to get them to mean something else--their contemporary equivalent, maybe. Claire had a much better time with her lines, I think, but it's all a bit of a blur now. Having two beautiful teen-aged people play the lead roles was a wonderful move, and the re-invention of the setting/context of the story worked quite well. I just think it's unfortunate that Shakespeare's language turned out to be something of an obstacle where it should of course have been the primary vehicle. -- Matt Kozusko mkozusko@parallel.park.uga.edu
