actually, no.

that's called a moderated list. they're not very common, but they're a
perfectly acceptable phenomonon.

some topics just need moderation. a good example of why this can be a good
thing for some topics is the difference between the usenet groups
soc.culture.russian, and soc.culture.russian moderated. one is filled with
trolls, spam, and cross-posted rasict codswallop. the other, while
it has a much lower number of posts, is full of useful, informative
information.

that said, i can fully understand your horror if you didn't know it was a
moderated list when you subscribed.

just out of curiosity, what was the topic of the list? maybe there is
another list devoted to it that isn't moderated.
