Bravo. Yes. The elusive olive appears in a few other places. F+Z: "'You
going to eat your olive or what?' Lane gave his Martini glass a brief
glance, then looked back at Franny. 'No,' he said coldly. 'You want it?' 'If
you don't,' Franny said. She knew from Lane's expression that she had asked
the wrong question. What was worse, she suddenly didn't want the olive at
all and wondered why she had even asked for it. There was nothing to do,
though, when Lane extended his Martini glass to her but to accept the olive
an consume it with apparent relish ... After the interuuption of the olive,
a short silence came over the table," (13). I believe very strongly that
there is also a mention of olives in A Perfect day for Bananafish, but I
can't find my book at the moment and I'm not going to try any harder or my
mother will continue guilt tripping me about not taking out the recycling,
and letting her cook dinner. So, quickly, it's something like this. Cybil's
mother promises her the olive from her martini, and later Cybil says to
Seymour that she likes olives and wax. I'm pretty sure but could be wrong.
Well, I must be going, or I'd think about this a bit more, and try to put
things together.
Catherine
