I once had a modest contact with the literary crowd
in Dublin among whom, I don't doubt for a moment,
there were a number of people who had read Ulysses
in its entirety. I have to say, though, I never met the wan.
We could all make confident allusion to stately Buck Mulligan
& had at least heard the name Blazes Boylan - & every damned
one took a pride in his scrotum-tightening take-off of
Siobhan McKenna doing Molly's last soliloquy.
But once you got them into the corner, adjusted the floods
& gave them a second shot of scopolamine they all, without
exception, admitted:
'Well, all right. Not ALL of it. A fair bit of it.
The important bits. You couldn't expect me to read
ALL that. Jaysus, I'm not a fucking American ...'
So congratters to Cecilia on her intrepidity. I have every
confidence she'll have it in the can by next Sunday. I can only
pray to God I won't be expected to make intelligent comments.
