Thanks for you answer about "The Silent" Valerie. I've often
wondered why Salinger didn't use a pen name...maybe by the time he
realized he needed to leave New York and just write, he knew his
style would defy what a pen name could attempt to hide, but I'm
thinking he may well have been a happier person had he not simply use
a traditional way to remove his personal self from the public eye.

I'm also curious...are you in France? Do they not read Salinger there?

PS: That's an innocent q--I just want to know. Balzac is one of my
favorite writers but I've been told the French don't read him
anymore. I'm always wondering what others read...perhaps because
there's a stack of papers for me to read right now and I'd rather
dive into Lost Illusions anytime!
