Matt, I don't think I'd lump Som P. Ranchan (An Adventure in Vedanta)
and Eberhard Alsen (Salinger's Glass Stories as a Composite Novel)
together. Ranchan's book is well intended but sloppy. I remember not
appreciating the lack of copy editing and Ranchan's primary focus on
Vedanta just didn't work for me. However, I think Alsen is still
quite good when it comes to the glass stories. His scholarship and
insights helped me somewhat. He too though, seems too consumed with
Vedanta for his own "Salinger" good. I think Elizabeth Kurian did a
much better job with Salinger and religion, but her book is even more
difficult to locate.

I do agree with you suggesting Hamilton. His research and scholarship
seem solid to me, especially in comparison with Paul Alexander's more
recent attempt at Salinger's biography.
