Matt,
You needn't aspire to smugness. You've obviously
already achieved that. But coollness & objectivity
were, I understood, the elusive, endlessly longed
for desiderata of all scholars.
The only thing I knew about Greenblatt has been
his resolute opposition to the sickening campaign
against Israeli eggheads for which - I shrivel to admit -
we have to thank that other establishment, the British
regiment of BBC, Oxbridge & Guardian-reading
outriders. (Warmly supported on this occasion,
I'm more amused to observe, by their Irish cousins.)
As for the gun, folks, he's quite right. It has to be seen
to be believed. Matt sprawled in our tiny dining room,
Texas boots up on the table, looking for all the world like
Savanarola as played by Coop & we could hardly take
our eyes off it.
'My goodness,' remarked my deeply impressed wife.
'It IS a whopper, isn't it?'
Scottie B.
