Sadly, my secret purpose of this message is first to ask if anyone has a
printable version of Hapworth that I can read. I think the reason my eyes
became worse at the recent doctor's visit was because I keep having to read
the Uncollected on the computer (protected PDF's).

But my "official" purpose is to somewhat "defend" Hapworth. Its true that
its hard to get past the age thing. But perhaps Salinger gave it to us like
that as an exercise? It be cool if he really did, at least I'd like to
think so. "see past the external to see the true internal" and whatnot.
Duke Mu and Kao all over again? I also like just the bits and pieces of
moments in Seymour's life, they give us an added twist into his character.
Almost like trying to say "dont think you got the answer quite right yet..."
I think the bits about his awakening sexuality and spurts of anger, again
if we can see past the age, are amusing, and do let us know that there is
"human" in him. His whole hangup about insisting that he and buddy are
normal human kids is interesting as well. And who can forget that part
where Seymour insists on keeping conscious during the stiching? If that
doesnt get you, at least you get to know what Salinger has been reading.
Its true that in some parts Salinger does go a little far, especially
with the reincarnation, etc. But who can say that its not at least a little
interesting? Perhaps thats why I like Hapworth- It keeps me thinking. A
little Seymour to keep in the back of my mind to help me get through the
tough factory days and keep my sanity.
