Found it, and indeed, it is the woman on the train that I remember. And
upon rereading it, I found only great love for her subject, not snobbery.
But that's just me.

That's the great thing about Project Gutenberg. You can find almost any
great novel, short story collection, or essay collection published before
1940 through it.
