Thanks for responding. I heard a children's author speak on a radio program
once -- she said to make her story even remotely realistic, she had to get rid
of one or both parents somehow, so the kids could have independent agency. As a
plot device, this makes sense.

The raw frequency, though, in even our oldest stories makes you think something
else is going on.

The Lion King, by the way, is the story of Hamlet -- the King is killed by the
King's brother, who takes his place. The son, deeply disturbed, suffers a
period of exile to eventually return and revenge his father's life. From here
the movie departs from the play, of course. Disney has to have their movies end
happily, so the death of the usurper brings about the restoration and healing of
the kingdom.
