phonies... Vikings... heathens?

I came across this passage, reading Arthur Miller's adaptation of Ibsen (Enemy of the People). It just jumped out of me (thought of Holden's rebellion against phonies)... kind of turns the whole thing on its ear for me anyway, since there's somehing truthful in Holden's perspective but, somehow, just nothingness here.

HOVSTAD: Then what will you ever amount to in this world?
MORTEN: Me? I'm going to be a Viking.
EJLIF: You can't! You'd have to be a heathen!
MORTEN: So I'll be a heathen.
MRS. STOCKMANN: I think it's getting late, boys.
BILLING: I agree with you, Morten. I think -
MRS. STOCKMANN, <i>making signs to Billing</i>: You certainly don't, Mr. Billing.
BILLING: Yes, by God, I do. I am a real heathen and proud of it. You'll see, pretty soon we're all going to be heathens!
MORTEN: And then we can do anything we want!
