franny, being my favorite literary character in history, is someone who
i've given a lot of thought to. i wonder if wynnona has the sincerity
necessary to play her. she gets really great parts, but i think she
could blow franny's wiltedness. maybe claire danes - who pulled off beth
in little women - could get the balance of fragile yearning and earnest
strength. my sister could do it, but as none of you know her, i doubt
i'll get any affirmation on that one.

completely unrelated - my dad was introduced to jds 30 years ago while he
was in prison. 4 years ago, i found out his old, beaten copy of nine
stories, and read it - without having any idea what i was getting myself
into, i dove in head first. i called him up and told him about my new
favorite short story - for esme, with love and squalor. it was also his
favorite, and had been for 30 years. i know that story is part of how my
dad made it through - and sometimes i wonder if that story isn't also how
buddy made it through - without following in his brother's footsteps.
