YES!!!!  John Frankenheimer's MANCHURIAN CANDIDATE and his follow-up
SECONDS.  Both films expand on the book's themes in every way.  Another
good example is SILENCE OF LAMBS, in which Jonathan Demme took a merely
interesting pot-boiler and actually made it ABOUT something.

Of course, none of these writers are J.D. Salinger...
