I've decided after some hesitation to reveal to the list that I am in fact the sole heir to the late Czar of All the Russias & hope in the fairly near future to resume my throne. There you go. That's my text for the day. In response to it I'd expect: 1) Jim to explain that the idea of Czardom is embedded in the human mind & finds expression in a number of related variables - Caesar, Tsar, Kaiser, etc. Dear Dr Bowman has become a vehicle for this powerful commonality & is voicing it with the assertive self-confidence that is an intrinsic part of the very word itself. 2) Will to remind us how Oblonsky, Timaroff & Vutkin have all drawn attention to the affinity of the Czar with the figure of the Holy Fool in 18th Century Russian literature. 3) Camille to tell us how moved she was by the statement since it echoed in her own heart the role of Czarina & how this has enabled her to enter into the shared experience of Imperial grandeur with the good doctor. 4) JD Hadden to ask with the eminent good sense of the uncorrupted: is the old bugger pulling our leg, has he been at the LSD again, or is it remotedly possible he has some kind of Russian blood ? Scottie B. - who can't welcome warmly enough the arrival of a newcomer who writes with a cogency & clarity not always the most prominent feature of our exchanges. Glad to see you, JD. God, am I glad.
