Dear list, First of all, thanks to tim who helped me catch the letter with rye a day late. It's no big deal, but here'a summary: Basically,Robert Pinsky (a friend as well as our current poet laureate) wrote a ny times op ed piece arguing that education needs to more easily integrate talented poets into teaching roles...(see "Writers Who Could Be Teachers" 6/29, op ed page of nytimes). I've been trying to get RP to look at a book I like (_The Elephants Teach: Creative Writing Since 1880_ by DG Meyers) and emailed him when I read his op ed piece...my email focused me enough to write a short letter to the Ny times stressing creativity in education and calling for more innovative teaching and pedagogy valuing teaching in graduate creative writing programs. I don't know what the rules are on quoting the above mentioned texts but imagine they are accessible through the nytimes web site... BTW, in email, RP basically agreed with me on his way to some needed rest on the cape...will On Tue, 7 Jul 1998, Tim O'Connor wrote: > > > Can Will's letter be reproduced here for those of us outside the USofA? > > I don't know -- Will, would you like to post it here and provide some > context regarding the Op-Ed piece that prompted you to write a response? > > --tim > > >
