Oh, Mr Cynical ... that's just a bit of a generalization don't you think?
If I'd been writing for the money I would very likely be a penniless
vagabond on the streets right now. And when we're talking about Crichton
and Grisham we're talking about an entirely different thing to say, a
writer putting out his or her first heartfelt tome through a tiny
publishing house and ending up stacking seconded copies under an old plank
to serve as a coffee table ... These writers are not writers, they are a
business called Crichton Inc or Grisham Inc. And there still are perfectly
creditable writers who are happy to stick with fiction despite enticements
elsewhere - Douglas Coupland for example.

Naturally if someone offered me a million dollars for my book, I'd take it.
But in the meantime, getting my message out there is what counts. In fact,
bizarre as it may seem, I've just entered the movie industry in order to
make the publishing industry finally take notice of my name!
