I am an academic. I've published scholarly articles, studied a dozen years to get 3 degrees, and care about the world of ideas...but I am having difficulty with generalizations... I always wanted to be a writing teacher since realizing my writing was not going to support me alone. I had the luck to try business (I was once winner of "salesman of the year"!), learn about earning money by driving a cab, and knowing my axis was about poetry and writing it even as I spun out of "the real world" and back into a world of academic ideas when I returned to do a phd in the 80's-90's. I simply don't think the stereotypes flying around on this list are cool. For one thing, I'm one of many academics learning to learn in cyberspace and am aware of many of my colleagues struggles to learn how to use new tools and resources effectively. I've learned how to listen to thinking about salinger on this list, for example, and use email discourse to improve my understanding and insights. It's so easy to attack academics based on the old stereotypes which may still be true for many, but I don't think it's all that fruitful, even for bananafish! will
