And although I like to think of myself as a thoreauly non-violent kinda guy,
I'm going to have to challenge you to a duel!

In fact, I challenge anybody to come up with a writer who has produced as
many loveable (or, for that matter, detestable....) characters as William
Shakespeare.  Assuming that, in some way, he had those characters in his
head (or in his soul) before he put them onto paper (and ultimately onto the
stage), he has to be, BY DEFINITION, the world's most loveable author....

(If you'd used FINNEGAN's WAKE instead of ULYSSES, I might have agreed with
you about Joyce, though....)
