Maybe he just had the gun in his suitcase, and Muriel knew about it, and
it wasn't a Big Deal. He was a soldier, after all. I've known cops who
have kept firearms nearby -- more or less -- at all times.

I should think that purchasing the gun in Florida would be a greater
indication of a planned suicide (why else would he buy a gun on
vacation?), and having one in his luggage allows for the possibility of
an (relatively) unplanned one.
