More posts on Seymour's suicide and method and intention and meaning and
it's nearing a hundred in San Francisco today (where we think 75 is HOT),
so, please forgive the screech in the subject line and below.

1. Maybe the Glass Saga is nothing but a vechicle to present a cautionary
tale in the person of Seymour. Readers: Don't go to Camp Hapworth, don't
play stoopball and marbles, don't read poetry (especially Rilke), don't
write poetry (especially double-haikus), don't pursue (or try to pursue) a
spiritual path, don't not show up for your wedding and elope, don't go to
Florida on vacation.

2. JDS has spent ten-plus years (seventeen-plus if you count APDFB in the
Saga) of his life seemingly devoted to this family and its main character,
one Seymour Glass. Does it *all*--the Seymour of RHTRBC, Zooey, SAI,
Hapworth--lead to that angry young man in the elevator who is waiting to
explode with hatred and rage at his sleeping Murial?

(The disconnect seems there.)

3. Perhaps Josh was on to something with his earlier post along the lines
of APDFB didn't reflect the facts of the vacation/suicide. Perhaps that
German typewriter has gotten the details, in addition to the central
character, wrong.

4. Perhaps Seymour had to commit suicide. Would we bother to read the
Glass Saga if, say, on the way to Columbia, S., while crossing the street,
was blown away by a NYC taxi?

5. Is it the idea of suicide itself, or is it the details, the
circumstances of it, which seem so damning in this case?

6. I take it almost no one accepts Buddy's "explanation" of the suicide,
beautifully played out in the Overture to SAI.

7. Well, don't you see: S. was yin/yang. First: the "feminine" wrists'
scars; then, from the Hemingway-side-of-things: gunshot.

I think I'll go outside and frolic in the fountain.
