Regarding Scottie's comments, I, too, in my handful of years, have seen
innumerable female wrists with fading scars, and nary a male one. And
of the three completed suicides that I have been within a few degrees of
separation from, all were performed by middle-aged males and all were by
firearm.
I read somewhere that men successfully suicide far more often than
women, and that they are far more prone to use a gun in so doing. If I
remember correctly, the preferred female method was pills. Maybe guns
are just less frequently used in Europe. They do seem to be an American
obsession.
