On page two as part of "Mets Notebook" in today's NYTimes is a report of
Bobby Valentine, the Manager of the NY Mets, reading TCITR in the
clubhouse while waiting for the team bus. The book was gift from his son
because it's his favorite book and the manager wanted to reread it so they
could talk about it on Father's day. Considering our recent hesitation to
let sports color our usually literary meandering, I thought this bit of
news was perfect irony and a cultural indicator of how widespread
Salinger's effects on his readers really are...what a perfect nexus
today for our bananafish list. will
