Hello all,
I must interrupt here and say that PEAS ARE SATAN'S FOOD! They are little,
green, nauseating balls from HELL! If one of them so much as touches my
other food in a restaurant that has conspiratorially included them on my
plate, I can't eat that other food. Of course, I never allow one of the
little demonic buggers in my own house, and if they are served by someone I
am visiting, I leave immediately (mostly to spare their carpet some
seriously
tough stains).

OB Sal: I haven't yet had a chance to read the Malcolm piece, but it
sounds
as if there is an echo in it of the old Ihab Hassan insider/outsider --
sensitivity reading of Salinger about it. Is Malcolm reworking Hassan's
thoughts on this aspect of Salinger? The Hassan piece, I recall, was called
"Sensitive Outsider vs. Vulgarian." I still have it in an old anthology of
Salinger criticism. I'll have to check the Malcolm out next week, when I
should finally have some time. Thanks, all.
