'Cec is absolutely on the button. With Salinger,
EVERYTHING is insignificant.'
Feeling a bit squirrely today, I see.
Ahem. To address that point, even though it was made
ironically, I have to say that as a serious writer,
there is no such thing as an insignificant
detail.
If you're serious about your craft, that is.
Even if you argued that someone selected a number out
of the air and stuck it into the text, you still couldn't
convince me that it had no meaning. When I arbitrarily
write "three," for instance, there is a host of
meaning behind that number of which I am perfectly aware.
I may not consciously think it when I write it, but I
know what "three" means to me.
