 Hi!
Will's quote of Salinger mentioning dust jackets reminded me of being recently at Borders. There at the beginning of the S's, were Salinger's four books in 3 formats: small paperback, large papaerback and hardback. The weird thing was the dust jackets of Franny and Zooey, and Raise High & Seymour. Salinger himself writes on the inside of the dust jackets about his Glass stories and how some new material is soon scheduled to appear in The New Yorker, and about other stories and material underway regarding the Glasses. After a nano-second jolt, I realized that even though these volumes were being reprinted 40 years later, the publisher had left the original dust jacket copy intact. But the part that killed me was this sentence: "It is a long-term project, patently an ambitious one, and there is a real-enough danger, I suppose, that sooner or later I'll bog down, perhaps disappear entirely, in my own methods, locutions and mannerisms." Talk about predicting the future!
Bye!

agree with Jim that Salinger and Cheever sound more similar. As for
the point about 6 fish making a literary allusion, not in my class
and unless there's more evidence posted, the point fails on this list
as well (sorry chris).

Perhaps Salinger's aversion to phony writing is something he may have
learned from Hemingway? will
