Hi Robert!

Nice intro!

I greedily read the book when it came out a couple of
years ago, so my memory is vague. I really was
entranced by the beginning, where she talks about
Salinger's early writing, her mother, etc. But once
she's born, it got a bit much. Like she needed an
editor to say we don't need to know everything about
your 3rd grade experience. Anyhow, I can't imagine
having JDS as my dad, so it must have been pretty
weird. He certainly comes across as failed father and
husband. I dimly recall Matt Salinger writing
somewhere that he didn't remember growing up in the
household as described in the book. So who are you
going to believe? Not to mention the Joyce Maynard
book. Between the two, if 50 % is true, it certainly
does affect the Salinger myth. Certainly, somewhere
between feet of clay and crotch of clay. But in the
end it's the writing that counts AS readers. But the
women in his life sure seem to have issues! And I
guess one would have to wonder if the writing itself
reveals/reflects the flaws of the man. Perhaps we
need a shrink to take that one on...

Anyway, happy swimming!
Midge
