Fante is wonderful. Get hold of The John Fante Reader if you want to
sample a cross-section of his stuff. Then go on to some of the novels
from there. He is very evocative. Some consider him a Beat. He was
lionized by Bukowski. I'm not one to pigeonhole the man; call him
what you will, but do read him.
