He often wrote standing up, but he also worked on a typewriter. For a
long time he had a rule that he would not drink while writing, but
after a point ... well ... you can see for yourself what he had for
breakfast.

Hemingway did massive rewrites when he was good. I've seen manuscript
pages and they are meticulous. I have never seen manuscripts from
later, when he was not good, so I can't say how much revision he did.
You can read his descriptions of some of the way he worked if you
investigate A MOVEABLE FEAST.

God knows how much revision Salinger does. Come to think of it, God
probably isn't allowed to know any more than the rest of us.
