One of the reasons I love Tim O'Connor is that he knows not to manage
the list too much. I agree with Jim--deleting messages is the only
answer--trying to control discourse on an unmoderated listserv is
folly because it is only really controlled by joining or leaving or
deleting. I don't read every post made to this list and it seems like
one of the folks who I delete routinely is calling for more serous
literary discussion of Salinger. Sure...I love discussing Salinger as
literature...been doing it longer than anyone on this list except for
Stephen Foskett (our list founder)...but trust me, it happens in ways
that are tied to our lives. Each bananafish has his or her own style
of posting and I think encouraging the haphazard, personally styled
post is better than all the scholarship in the world! Those with
scholarly and literary concerns get heard here quite well here so
what's the problem?
