On the brace thing, I am not entirely sure that it's exactly accurate,
because I remember Ingrid Bergman using the word brace for her dental appliance in
Casa Blanca, which was released in 1942. I suppose that's about mid 20th
century. She actually called it a brace, though. Good ol' Rick asked her where she
had been so many years ago, and she said, oh, I don't know, probably having a
brace put on my teeth. Just a note.
