Thanks much for the details, Britt. Facts are always welcome. I'm
using the Shorter OED, which lists the word "brace" as "dental
appliance" from M20, which covers the years1930 to 1969. So that
definitely falls in the range.

Details are always nice, though. A useful entry for Blake would be one
in English from the early 19th C or late 18th C, or anything before,
really.

Hope this doesn't make anyone Think Too Much :).
