Hi Kim,

Yes, I remember reading Unseld a few years back. Thanks for the reminder
about the Rilke letter. I cannot recall seeing anything in any of Franz's
journals or letters about the man. I'll have to look again, just to be sure.

Me? I'm a sap for the canon, I'm afraid. I'm a beat fan (especially
Ginsberg, Ferlinghetti and some Corso -- all for fun). Despite his being a bastard,
I love the sound of Eliot at his best. It's magical. On the odder side, I
like Blanchot and Jabes and yes, there are times when I can get lost in Ponge
and Holderlin even. And, Blake and Keats and Shelley and Coleridge and company
make me smile. I like Nikki Giovanni and Anne Sexton And Sylvia and several
other more modern poets, and, to tell the truth, I have a great time with the
Metaphysicals -- Donne still blows me away. Hell, every time I read Willie's
Sonnets I find something new and amazing. I don't know. There are, in the
end, too many to name. I can't let this paragraph end without Waits, though.
He's there too -- "and no one's gone over to close his eyes / and there's a
racing form in his pocket / circled Blue Boots in the third / and the cashier at
the clothing store didn't say a word / as the siren tears the night in half /
and someone lost his wallet / well it's surveillance of assailants if that's
whatchawannacallit."

Tears me up.

But that's just me.

All the best,

--John
