I am new to the mailing list, but I found the discussion about similarities
between Hemingway and Salinger interesting. I do think, though, that
Salinger took a totally different attitude towards the short story. That is,
Salinger's short stories read more like a novel, and Hemingway, with the
exception of the Nick Adams character is writing a true short storie. Anyhow
Hemingway is using the Adams character to glorify himself, to twist around
the story of his true life. I do not know how much of Salinger's short
stories are autobiographical, but so many of Hemingway's are. Nine Stories
contains some real short stories but they show no similarity in style to
Hemingway's. Especially the sentence structure. Often after reading
Hemingway are writer will use really sort sentences with interspersed long
ones, like Hemingway did. But Salinger's sentences are almost all medium
length. Salinger does utilize some of Hemingway's ambiguity, on the other
hand. Whatever.
Celine perhaps had an influence??? Joel
