A couple of days ago I discovered the Bananafish web page and
this discussion list much to my sheer delight. So, I thought I
would just say hello to you all and share some info with you
that I hope will not be a burden to you.

I grew up in the 50s and 60s, the era when Catcher was
considered a work of the devil, and Salinger's books were being
written about and discussed with great fervor, and selling like
hotcakes. My first Salinger work was Catcher in high school. I
read everything else and have re-read it many times since. I
have read countless articles, essays, and monographs about the
man and his work. His work continues to improve with age (mine)
and has been a vital part of my life's experience.

Back in April of 1988, two photographers followed Salinger
around Cornish, NH, where he lives, and finally photographed
him at a local supermarket. Salinger was miffed by the
experience and let the two men know his feelings. If any of you
are interested in seeing the photo, you will find it at page 94
of the May 2, 1988, edition of TIME magazine, in the "People"
section, accompanied by a typically short blurb. Another photo
of Salinger taken in 1979 by Michael McDermott appears in one of
the more recent critical studies of Salinger's work. I cannot
remember which book it was in, but if I find it, I will share
that info here.

Enough for now. I hope you keep pursuing all literature and art
in general, and Salinger in particular. It has been a
beautifully rewarding experience in my life, and I hope it
will be the same for you. My best wishes to you all.
