First of all, a few words to Mr. Malcs, since you so vapidly reduced my book
burning narration to a neo-nazi demonstration. I don't understand your
logic: book+burn=nazi. Who's being more extreme? I who simply burnt a
book I disliked, or you accusing me of being a nazi for burning a book?
Well, anyways, I don't want to get personal like you needlessly did. Simply
I just want to hear your opinion on why you recommend such a book, which
like I said before, claims that Latin Americans enjoy beating their wives.
I just want an argument, or something with a little substance, not too much,
but just s little. I'm not asking for much. It's funny lately I've been
reading a bunch of garbage on the list, for example: "I like Kerouac, I
think he's one of the greatest writers of all time." Period... Great, like
I care. Give some reasons or something. Explain your opinions or
conclusions. I don't mean to sound snobish, I just think that one should
explain themselves when they make such absolute claims or remarks.
Now, I'd like to direct a few words to Bill Jackson. I don't care
if you can speak and write spanish, and I don't care if you go to Texas A&M
and are studying spanish and engineering, and I already know that I can
speak english. I didn't need your affirmation. Furthermore, I feel that
your conclusion where you qualified my letter as "out of context, historical
relevance, and watered down" is superflous since I wasn't trying to write an
in depth analysis of Paz's garbage. I could claim the same about your
vacuous analysis of my letter since it virtually didn't say anything
concrete. I know about it's context, I know about the stupid north/south
bullshit, but it still doesn't excuse the ridiculous claim that Mexicans
love to beat their wives, and that Mexican women actually enjoy it.
Moreover, he claims that if a Mexican man doesn't necessarily show his
masculinity through this behavior, he is not considered a real man. Uh, such
garbage! You claim that Paz "stuck to the mexican problem as discerned by a
mexican," and it clearly demonstrates that you know very little about Paz or
mexican culture. Paz attempted to analyze latin american cultura popular.
You're absolutely right when you say that Paz mainly stuck to the Mexican
identity, but you failed to comprehend that Paz equaled Mexican identity
with latin american identity, as if one existed. Furthermore, apart from
making such incredible reductions, Paz goes on to make many absurd claims
about mexican cultura popular which I consider completely absurd, ignorant,
and absolutely ridiculous. I don't understand when you say that he struck a
chord in me. I just hate to read such garbage about "latin american
culture" and "mexican culture," and later be blindly recommended to read it.
I still can't believe that such a bozo was awarded the Novel prize. Well,
I'm tired of Paz, I don't care to elaborate much more on this idiot. Advice
to Bill, you should look up the meaning of "irony."
Robert
