Hey,
I remember reading somewhere that Salinger was influened by William
Saroyan and that Catcher has many parallels to The Human Comedy. After reading
both I would have to agree.Saroyan's work almost always features children
prominently. The main character in THC ,"Homer",is coming of age and trying to
make sense of an adult war-torn world.Homer unlike Holden has a reliable
adult in Spangler and later the soldier to turn to.THC is very sentimental
,probably very sappy and Frank Capra-like,but I still love it and admire it's
greatness.Catcher is a more realistic story and has many more believable
characters.Catcher obviously is the more enduring of the two but I wonder if
anyone else is a Saroyan fan and could expound on his alleged influence on
JD's work.
Gruss Gott,
Mike
