only if you say you don't like jd salinger :). i have never cared too
much for hemingway myself - no one has to *like* every single author there
is out there, or even respect them, even the "great" ones.

how exactly does one "show off" that they're reading a book? reading is a
virtually private, intimate and anti-social act in and of itself, whether
you're in your closet reading by match light or whether you're at
barnes&noble reciting quotes from Infinite Jest out loud. and if someone
else happens to catch the title of the work, well that's what the cover is
*for*. only when one talks about the book, after they have read it, and
they reveal any sort of knowledge or insight if any, is that aspect of
reading a public and shared act. i prefer lisa's philosophy.

as for trainspotting - well, it *was* named one of the top ten most
popular books of the 20th century in great britian! (according to a post
on this list months ago)
