Lorrie Moore. One of my absolute favorites. And Madison Smartt Bell,
another very, very strong contender for end-of-century lists.

It is a very fine book. His "The Water-Method Man" is a novel that
makes me crack up, laughing out loud, no matter how often I read it.
Ditto for Philip Roth and Portnoy's Complaint.
Maybe I'm laugh-deprived, but these both tickle me, any time, any place.
