Angie, have you read _One Hundred Years of Solitude_ by Gabriel Garcia Marquez? I would also suggest the short stories of Anton Chekhov and Flannery O'Connor since their work may eventually be part of your college studies anyway. As for poetry, I say follow your bliss but since you mentioned enjoying the conversational tones in salinger, you may want to take a look the poetry of Richard Hugo.
