Angie, have you read _One Hundred Years of Solitude_ by Gabriel Garcia
Marquez?  I would also suggest the short stories of Anton Chekhov and
Flannery O'Connor since their work may eventually be part of your college
studies anyway.  As for poetry, I say follow your bliss but since you
mentioned enjoying the conversational tones in salinger, you may want to
take a look the poetry of Richard Hugo.  He's my personal favorite (along
with wallace stevens who's too stuffy and Pablo Neruda who I also suggest
you take a look at...) because Hugo's poetry really feels like I can hear
the poet speaking directly to and into me.  will
